Aisle width calculations for counterbalanced trucks

Definitions to calculate aisle width

The aisle width (Ast) of a forklift is the minimum width of a straight aisle in which a truck carrying a given load can turn 90°.

The Ast is defined by:

  • Wa: turning raduis
  • b12: width of the load
  • l6: length of the load
  • x: load distance
  • a: 200 mm safety clearance
  • b13: internal turning radius

Formulas to calculate aisle width

3- and 4-wheel* counterbalanced trucks

*when b12 is larger than two times the internal turning radius b13:

     Ast = Wa +√((l6 + x)² + (b12/2)²) + a

4-wheel* counterbalanced trucks

*when b12 is equal/smaller than two times the internal turning radius b13:

    Ast = Wa + x + l6 + a
